eli5: How does sun screen work AND what/why is the difference in efficacy between Zinc-based and common sunscreens?

Sunscreen is skin paint that’s opaque in the UV spectrum. Some as clear in the visible spectrum others are white in the visible spectrum, like Zinc oxide.
