eli5 How does the tilt tension knob on a chair work ?

By spinning the tension knob I can make it heavier to tilt backward, but how does that work? And it is possible to over tension?

It’s essentially a spring, by tightening the knob you shorten its length, making it stiffer and harder to stretch. Which means you need more force to tilt backwards.
