The Earth is a globe. If you travel East from New York City, you will eventually circumnavigate the globe and arrive back in New York City.
Just before you arrive back in New York City, you’ll be in Michigan, which is West of New York City.
That means, by traveling East a very long way, you’ll end up West of where you started.
