Eli5: How does whirlpools form?

I started thinking about this today and i cant figure out how it would happen.

I believe it’s when you have currents near each other that go in opposite directions. Or when water is flowing in or out of a bay when the tide goes out; it moves pass large objects (rocks) under the water and creates a swirl at that location.
