Eli5: How does Wolt/Doordash (app) know I shared my signup link (refferal) with someone 8 (!) years ago.

Short story. When wolt came I was broke and I sent my Snapchat contacts (around 50-70 people at the time) my refferal link.

I have never shared it anymore. Do this date (today) I still recieve credits saying that someone signed up.

I understand it could be through cookies but since 8 yrs ago dont they expire? Dont people get new phones etc? I guess i have received like 50 free credits throughout this time

edit: referal link sent through snapchat 8 years ago

Referral codes are specific to you. It doesn’t matter if the new phone or anything like that is used, the referral code stays the same and is linked only to your account.

Could be cookie data, most likely an entry in a database they keep active, or it could be they purchased data from Snapchat.

Companies buy data from other companies all the time. It’s stated in the Terms of Service and Privacy Policies nobody reads when they sign up.
