Usually a liquid wood furniture polish (household cleaner) is just a analog for the function of paint – it uses other persistent liquid chemicals such as silicone to fill in the scratches and reduce dispersion of light. Others have waxes and drying oils, which indeed would work like paint if they also included pigment.
