eli5: How exactly are recharable batteries recharged?

I know that in a normal battery once the electrons have made their way from the anode to the cathode the battery dies, but rechargeable batteries are able to sort of reset the battery once it’s been put on charge.

Every time I watch a YouTube video on rechargeable batteries all they say is “We do this by forcing the electrons back to the anode” without explaining exactly how that works and its driving me up the goddamn wall.

Electric cells (commonly but incorrectly called batteries, which are strictly speaking more than one cell connected together) can be either galvanic or electrolytic. A galvanic cell has a chemical reaction that releases electrical energy. This happens when the battery is discharging and powering your appliance.

An electrolytic cell carries out the reverse reaction of the galvanic cell. You’re using electrical energy to force the system to carry out a reaction it doesn’t want to do, but in doing so you are regenerating the reactants for the galvanic cell.
