eli5: How is it that certain surgeries can take several hours?

I understand that certain surgeries can be very technical and require a lot of skill and even a couple of hours, but I don’t understand what would make a surgery last upwards of 5 hours. That seems like a lot of time for cutting someone open and fixing them up.

It’s an estimation. There’s a lot of complexity and prep involved in any surgery and a long checklist to be sure everything is done effectively and in the right order. I mean just search for a step by step process for a surgery and you’ll see. They have teaching videos for specific surgeries on YouTube, many of which are full length. Much more than just cut and sew
