eli5: How is my nose able to generate so much snot in such a short time?

Mucous comes from cells lining your airways. Not just from your lungs. When you have a runny nose it’s coming only from the cells lining your mucous membranes. Those in turn, take the raw materials from blood.

basically the same concept of how a faucet can generate so much water. although it appears to be the case, the water is actually coming from the pipes below. same with your nose, its actually coming from mucus in the lungs that eventually gets discarded through the nostrils
