Eli5: how the do heart transplants work?

347 viewsBiologyOther

I am genuinely confused. I have been led to believe that without your heart you’ll be dead within minutes. But heart transplants happen and most are successful. So I have only a few questions.

How the hell do they keep a person during a heart transplant when the old heart has been removed?
How long do transplants take?
Is the transplant between hearts a fast process?
(This question is more morbid but I am genuinely curious.)
How long could someone last without a heart inside their body? (I am assuming not long)

Sorry for any errors or types I am on mobile and I am bad at remembering to reread things

with machines we are able to artificially keep the blood circulating temporarily while the transplant is completed

the transplant surgery takes anywhere from 6-12 hours depending on how complicated to finish
