When you click a link, you send a request to a server to ask it to deliver the website. All a bot does is automate that process so it happens automatically instead of a click in a web browser being required.

This can be detected if there are too many requests from the same location in too fast a pace. As a human it is impossible to click links faster than a certain rate. So, things that are particularly fast are probably bots.
