Eli5: If Earth was just a tad bit closer/further from the Sun, would we burn/freeze?

I’m thinking about 1 mile away or closer to the sun.

No. The earth already has an elliptical orbit and its distance varies by far far greater amounts than 1 mile. On average the earth varies by about 3 millions miles over the course of its orbit with the closest point being in early january and its furthest point being mid july.
