Eli5 If Mental Illnesses can be categorised with certain symptoms then surely they can’t be psychological?

If mental illnesses can be categorised according to certain symptoms, for example, Schizophrenia and hearing voices, seeing things etc… then surely certain part(s) of the brain are not working correctly / damaged / underdeveloped etc in all sufferers… just as a broken arm for me is the same as someone 3000 miles away. So why do we say that often say Mental Illness’s are Psychological rather Psychiatric?

A broken arm is quick and easy.

Your arms broken, I can see it, you can feel it. You were just in an accident. It was fine before and now it’s broken. Let’s give you pain meds from the obvious pain you’re having and try to get the bone and skin to heal back as consistent evidence has shown us.

Diagnosing your brain and how it affects you mentally and physically is still a complicated field.

Why is your brain not behaving as it’s perceived but the general community as “normal”. Was it a physical injury to the head (blunt force etc). Or was it a chemical imbalances at some point in your life that is only now showing symptoms? Has your perception of yourself or reality been affected negatively by an event? Was it generic or an environment influence that caused it?

We tend to focus on the brain and it’s chemistry/symptoms after something has presented itself that forces us to look. We don’t scan your brain from the moment it’s formed and as you develop while keeping a detailed history. We don’t have a video library of your entire life to look back on and observe.

We can scan your brain after clear signs appear and compare it to others and narrow down a probable cause. Find the similarities that we CAN SEE and assume it’s what you have. Just like we can potentially narrow it down to not needing medication and more of a “Let’s help you through this”.

You’re your own unique person. Just like a bee can scare someone away who has an allergy. Life in general will mold your personality to where certain things will affect you differently then the person who also broke their arm.

Was it life that dealt you a shitty hand and your having trouble dealing with it? Or was it something you were born with that has now presented itself.

It’s complicated
