Eli5: if our bodies are able to form entire human beings from scratch, why can’t it grow back organs that have been amputated?

There is no adaptive reason for nature to have given us the gift of regrowing organs. If we lose an arm or a kidney, that usually indicates lack of fitness and nature would rather have us die and not procreate and pass our broken kidney genes to offspring. It culls the herd.
