eli5 if the Sahara desert deposits millions of metrics tonnes of mineral fertilizer in the Amazon, how did it sustain it self when Sahara wasn’t a desert 10k years ago?
Forests can exist without that extra nutrition, it’s just that having it produces an environment where things can grow even better. There are other rainforests in the world that don’t benefit from that extra fertilization (e.g. in southeast Asia or central Africa), and they’re still plenty dense.
