I was wondering why the letter grading scheme is like this. Why did it skip the letter E?

These letter grading schemes are terrific. In Grade 4 I had perfect scores in Math and Spelling but got a C for effort in both. The teacher explained to my mother that she could only give out so many A’s and B’s and I really didn’t have to try very hard to score perfect marks. Never did understand why she would want me to put more effort into simple tasks.
