Eli5: In movies people instruct bleeding out characters to stay with them and to keep their eyes open. Does falling asleep/ blacking out actually accelerate the process of dying or is that just a movie cliche?

It’s a movie cliché. Much more interesting and good for the actors to have 2 people interacting than just one person fumbling around an unconscious person doing who knows what. It could also be a holdover from old timey medicine where there wasn’t a lot you could do but yelling at them to stay awake meant you were doing *something*.
