It is an infection. Minor or moderate acne is harmless but it can eventually become severe enough to cause complications like cysts or loss of skin function due to scaring.

As an aside, I struggled heavily with acne in highschool. The only thing that seemed to address it other than medications was to change my pillow case every night. I also used to wrap a clean towel around my pillow that I used the next morning… puberty sucked

Id say neither to be honest. It’s usually just a sign of poor hygiene outside of puberty or poor diet. If I eat well and wash my face twice a day I wont have any acne.
