You need to get the heat into the rooms. A giant heater can work, and work well, if it heats air which is then blown into the rooms, or water which is then led into radiators in the rooms. If there’s no method for efficiently distributing centralized heat into the rooms, small heaters in each room will ensure an even temperature.

A great advantage of central heating is that you can combine many heat sources, and replace them as needed. In my apartment complex, a ground source heat pump does the bulk of the heating using three boreholes down in bedrock, and a supplemental electrical heater helps if it’s really cold or if the heat pump goes on the fritz. There was also a pellets burner (now disconnected) and before that an oil burner (long since removed), and all of them fed the same radiator system over the years, which did not need to be replaced or greatly modified when the heat source was upgraded.
