[eli5] Our body’s blood circulation response to injury

Just recently fractured my foot in a place where there is little blood flow. If I keep my foot low for long, my foot turns bluish purple. Why and how does our body respond to injuries with “sending” too much blood to that area? Biologically speaking, what is happening and why?

If a body part turns blue in that manner it’s a sign of internal bleeding. The body isn’t sending more blood, the blood just isn’t staying in the veigns/atteries and that makes it pool and collect
