Why do they exist?
How did they come into existence?
What are they made of?
How did we discover them?

They exist to protect the delicate insides of the oyster from environmental irritants like grains of sand.

Oysters secrete a insulating material around said irritants.

The secretion hardens into a pearl and grows larger as more layers are added.

Can’t know for sure when they were discovered as pearls have been known for thousands of years but we likely discovered them shortly after we started eating oysters. 🙂

A pearl is for when a foreign body enters the oyster. This are usually grains of sand.
The oyster then covers the grain with calcium to protect itself for damage.
That’s all I know.
