Eli5: Pointy end of a hammer

Question

I know there are hammers for additional use like the once for pulling wood closer or lifting a nail out but i have no idea why there is that flat pointy end on a normal hammer

It depens on the type of hammer.

There are carpenters hammers, where the pointy end (“Finne” in germany, i dont know if its just called “fin” in englisch) is split. so you can draw nails out of wood.

Tile hammers have a very pointy finn, so you can use it to split..well, tiles.

Mason hammers have a hardened pointy end, to use it as a chisel.

So everything has its use.
