Eli5: saw a video of a man who left oatmeal in a concealed plastic container for a few years. It had 100s of maggots in it. How is this possible when it’s completely sealed? It’s not like a fly could lay any eggs.

It wasn’t sealed *before* that. Most of the food arriving on your table already contains contaminants, none of it is sterile.
