You often google a massive company’s website, and the first result is an ad which is for their website, and the second result is the same thing just without the ad.

If this company are already at the top of the searches, why do they pay extra to have an ad that puts them at the top of the search?

The company paid to be the top ad on many keywords, among them is their name so no copycat can try to pay to be the top hit for those words or try and deflect to steal info or sell bootlegged stuff.
