Eli5: underneath sand dunes?

If we were to dig down into sand dunes would we eventually hit the original ground before the sand dunes arrived? Say an animal was buried in the sand would it be perfectly preserved, would the sand stop enough air from reaching it and decomposing or can airflow penetrate the sand dunes?

If you dig down anywhere, you’re digging farther and farther back in time, generally.

So, for the most part, yes, if you were to start digging down from a sand dune, you’re eventually doing to dig into soil, and that soil at one point was likely the exposed layer, again, generally speaking.

As far as preservation, no, sand is not even watertight, let alone airtight.
