It connects your computer to speakers or microphones.

They used to be a separate circuit board (a “card”) but now most computers have one built in.

You might want a sound card if the sound card does something your computer doesn’t do already (e.g. surround sound)

Converts data into outputs for your speakers/headphones.
I wouldn’t buy one now tho, motherboard have good built-in sound anyway.

A sound card, simply put, is responsible for transforming the input from your computer into sound that you hear. More complicated sound cards can handle multiple speakers, different equalization settings, more complicated speakers, etc.
