eli5: What are the differences between Bipolar and Borderline Personality Disorders?

Lots of good answers, but one thing people don’t say it’s that some bipolars may have only manic or only depressive episodes.
So it happens that I have two friends whose fathers displayed two different states of bipolar disorder.
One friend’s father was maniacal, which made him sadistic and aggressive, while other friend’s father kept saying he’s going to kill himself.
The former died of old age abandoned by his family (he refused to be treated and almost killed his wife) and the latter has left house one day during his episode and was never seen again.
I also know a young guy who thankfully was diagnosed with bipolar in very young age so his father managed to get help for him. Before the therapy and medication he also had only maniacal episodes. He said the therapy and medication really helped him and he now has a normal amd stable life.
