Eli5: What causes a range of sex drive in different people?

For example, men typically have a higher sex drive than women because of testosterone, but what’s the deal when it’s the other way around?

It comes down to a large number of factors. Obviously the hormones in your body and the amount of them that you have can affect that, but so can your general well being, your diet, your environment, your body chemistry, your mental health, etc.

As for why women are considered less “horny” than men, unfortunately that is likely just social stigma and stereotype. I’m not accusing you of being sexist, but especially here in America there is a general perception of men as big, tough, dumb and horny, and women are all stick-thin, elegant and reserved in bed. It’s not “lady-like” to admit that sex is really good.

There are some statistics that I’ve seen in the past that suggest that women are actually more wanting of sex than men, but they can’t go about finding it the same way that a man would. It’s an interesting dilemma.

It’s not true that men have a higher sex drive than women generally. Depends on the person, their hormonal mix at any given moment, their circumstances, etc. Upbringing and socialization play a role, and people can learn to tamp down and deny their urges, so in societies where female sex drive is considered a bad thing, women may work to ignore their sex drive more than men, making it seem like women have less of a need/desire for sex than men.
