[ELI5] What does it mean to be “grounded” against electricity, and why does it keep you safe?

“You” don’t want to be grounded, you don’t want to be apart of the circuit at all. What you want is something more conductive then you near or around you to divert the current away from you. You want to be the hardest thing for electrons to pass though in your yard when lighting strikes.
