Eli5: What exactly is happening when you get a headache

A headache is complex,its merely just a body showing that its haveing a problem. it can be due to increase pressure in the head or something mroe common like a migraine which we call a primary headache(not due to another cause like blood pressure which we call secondary)
the thing is we really dont understand much about how primary headache works, sure we have theories about the ion channels being affected and affecting the vesselsin the end yada yada but the truth is we still dont fully understand it yet to say exactly what happens in one

There’s maybe a dozen kinds of headaches and a dozen more causes for a headache. For example, I get sinus headaches. Those heachaches are caused by the tissues in my sinus cavities getting inflamed and not having anywhere to expand. On the other hand, I also get caffeine withdrawl headaches when I don’t get my coffee. This is because caffeine causes the blood vessels to tighten and when they expand again they put pressure on the surrounding tissues.
There’s also psychosomatic headaches, muscle ache headaches, infections, and migraines. We really don’t understand what causes Migraines so they get their own category.
