Eli5 What happens to the horn? Part of the steering wheel when an airbag goes off

For context I just saw the post of the person who glued stones to the steering wheel edit; I mean the cover on top of the wheel not just the electronics

Well the airbag is in a column that bursts outward when a chemical reaction is ignited in the crash (so that lady basically made her steering wheel into a claymore). The horn is an electrical wire and fuse connected to the fuse box and a separate device further down in the dash (usually)

It just flops out of the way. Usually down, but not always. In theory, the stones and whatever else people glue to them shouldn’t hit you, but that glue won’t hold up well under the enormous forces on that piece, so they could go flying anywhere.

The wheel is designed to have a weak spot or seam that gives the expanding airbag an easy path to break through. As for the electronics they will (typically) be unaffected. The airbag portion of a steering wheel is usually removable and replaceable without the need to change the other components. Does that answer your question?
