[ELI5] what is genetic modification? Is it the cure to all?

Does fixing genetic defect will prevent it in ur children and such. Other than the moral argument, is there really a reason not to pursue this? Science is about exploration after all.

Nothing is “the cure to all.” Period.

As for the definition, genetic engineering or genetic modification is simply the targeted manipulation or modification of an organism’s genome via some use of technology, including bioengineering.

The use of technology distinguishes genetic engineering from selective breeding.

Breeding is a form of modifying an organism’s genome that has been practiced by humans for thousands of years to cultivate specific plant and animal species. Selective breeding requires no additional technology; it’s just selecting the individual organisms that will or won’t be bred in order to minimize or maximize certain characteristics over much longer stretches of time.

The moral argument tends not to be based around curing genetic illnesses, which genetici engineering could do, but rather that the technology could and would allow genetic manipulation of many other traits.

Most of those who are worried about the morality of the technology simply want stringent safeguards around its use so that it can be used for something like detecting and curing a genetic disease but can’t be used to pick the eye color of your child.
