Smegma is just the accumulation of dead skin and oils released by the skin. It is found in folds of the body, like near the vagina, penis, or abdomen. When it is there long enough skin flora (bacteria) can start to consume the dead skin cells, oils, and grow in those dark moist folds to create unpleasant odors.

The best way to avoid that is with good hygeine.

Smegma is a combination of shed skin cells, skin oils, and moisture. It occurs in both male and female mammalian genitalia. In female bodies, it collects around the clitoris and in the folds of the labia minora; in males, smegma collects under the foreskin. Smegma serves no purpose and should be avoided. Proper regular cleaning will prevent a buildup and accumulation of this.
