Moving up or down.

Our concept of directions is rooted in a system involving the pull of gravity. We assign the direction where it originates as “down”, and the opposite direction “up”.

Fundamentally, up and down are meaningless without the presence of a constant force like gravity in a direction. If you really want to impress, look up the “greatest thought” that Albert Einstein said he ever had.

Vertical motion is a change in height. What counts as “height” depends entirely on context, but is typically used to describe an axis which is parallel to the force of gravity.
