Brown henna is a plant pigment. Black henna is an artificial chemical dye that uses the same reaction as is used in hair dye and which gives some people a severe skin reaction. It’s mainly due to the diaminobenzene molecule (aka PPD or paraphenylene diamine) that links the dye molecule to the skin/hair.
