Many specialized practice areas within law don’t advertise to the public because they primarily don’t deal with the public. If your area of practice is intellectual property (patent, copyright, trademarks, etc.) you are unlikely to gain a lot of clients by advertising on billboards or on TV. If you do tax law, you are probably working with high net worth individuals, corporations or business entities and gain new clients through referrals, same with mergers and acquisitions, etc. If you do real estate law, people seek you out when they have a real estate transaction – often through referral from a real estate agent, escrow company, etc.
You do see advertising for lawyers who practice family law (divorce, custody, etc.), estate law, immigration, and personal bankruptcy – because like personal injury, their clients are the general public.
