eli5 : What really happens inside our bodies when we get a cold?

I recently caught cold and so I just got this question randomly while lying in bed.

Well, think of it this way.
Your body has a thermostat, normally that’s set to +/-37 degrees celsius. If your body temp drops below that level, you get cold, shiver to get warmer again. Visa versa, if your temp goes up above the “thermostat’s level” you feel warm and start to sweat to cool down. Now this thermostat setting is why you can feel cold even though you’ve got a fever when you’re sick. Your body is fighting a battle and needs a higher temp. Puts up the thermostat and thus even though your body temp is already warmer than usual, you can still ‘feel’ cold.
