ELI5- What’s the difference between a legally blind person and a blind person?

In the U.S., a legally blind person just can’t see better than 20/200 even with glasses or contact lenses, or they’ve got a field of vision that’s less than 20 degrees. (Or both.)

Blindness, on the other hand, just means “very bad eyesight.” Many people think blind people can’t see anything at all by definition, but technically speaking, you can still have *some* vision and still be blind.

I’m legally blind. I can still see, but it’s extremely limited. Everything is very blurry. I’m very sensitive to light. I have to wear sunglasses 90% of the time. I can’t really make out fine details, most things are just shapes. People are generally shapes so it’s pretty much a guess when I’m in a crowd as to who ppl are. Colors are iffy. Close objects are okay. Not the best.

Not sure that helps. Oh, this is what I have: I have macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy and neo-vascular glaucoma. I’ve had a stroke.
