Eli5: What’s the reason for why our appearance looks different in our head than when we look in the mirror?

Question in title. Idk why but sometimes I’m uglier and sometimes I’m hotter in my head, I can never quite visualize my appearance accurately for some reason. Wondering if it’s a psychological thing.

Our brains don’t have a perfect picture of us in our head. It just tries to save the important parts and fill in what it doesn’t know. A mirror reflect a nearly perfect image of us so our eyes can see exactly how you look.
