eli5: when and why did cannabis become demonized in the USA?

Racism towards Mexicans growing hemp which they referred as marijuana. Then the whites got mad and felt like their jobs were being taken away, so they made it illegal to possess marijuana or even really speak about it and bam doodly doo and marijuana was demonized. (hemp was pretty popular back then, they would make clothes out of it until cotton got super big, because it was less itchy)
