(ELI5) when babies are raised with bilingual families, are they learning it as just one jumbled language, or as two separate languages?

Also would it become difficult to discern and seperate them when they join school for example, and interact with people that only speak one

I grew up in an English household but went to a French school (starting in pre-kindergarten). My mom can speak French but her default language is English and my dad only speaks English.

What was weird was that if ever I was upset or wanted to correct something I would revert to French. I had only really experienced discipline and overt correction at school (my parents were very gentle and my school was not). Before I could regulate my emotions all my frustrations would be expressed in French.

It was very difficult for my anglophone father as I struggled to communicate displeasure in a language he understood, which would lead to more frustration from me.

Learning another language at a young age is a good experience. You’re not afraid to mess up, you’re still learning to communicate anyways.

Sometimes I forget the word in the other language but even as a kid it was easy to separate the two.
