Eli5: when skinning an animal what happens to the butthole? Is there a hole where the butt was?

Generally you’ll disembowel an animal before skinning. The skin and large intestine will be cut and trimmed around the anus.

Most skins and furs are then cut into more regular panels and shapes before use.

There is a hole / gap at the top of the rear legs.
