Eli5, when you are on your feet all day, how do you feet adjust physically at the tissue level? are they similar to muscles that grow when they are “worked out” when you shift your lifestyle to suddenly standing 10 hours a day?

Yes all tissue follows this but all tissue can also only handle a certain level of stress. That’s why sudden increases I’m standing hurt more.

I’m a runner… We wear shoes that leave room in the toes and don’t tie our shoes tight.

Why? While running your foot bones spread apart and your feet can grow an entire size.

I’d guess this happens when standing too.

Yes, they do. Slower than muscle, but even bone reshapes its inner structure to more efficiently carry the new load.

Because it’s slower you can hurt yourself with sudden, big changes. Muscle can adjust relatively quickly to say, weightlifting, but the points where tendons connect with bone need more time. With bad luck you can rip a tendon off by lifting too much too soon.
Or standing and walking too much all of a sudden can lead to fractured middle foot bones. Relatively common with military recruits who aren’t used to long marches.

If possible, go easy. Give your body some time. If it hurts more than a bit of soreness, chances are it’s too much yet. Injuries take longer to heal and then start training again than going with a slow training plan to begin with.
