Eli5 Why, after many drinks, does the bitterness and sting of liquor not seem as bad as the first drink?

As the title says. Why does that first shot or taste of liquor produce such strong reactions, but then 10 shots/drinks later I can’t feel any of the repulsive tastes and only the flavors in the alcohol?

Because alcohol dulls your senses, including your sense of taste. After a few drinks you don’t taste aswell, or smell aswell either. So it becomes more bearable because you aren’t really tasting it anymore.

Like using numbing cream on your arm before a bloodtest, alcohol is like using numbing cream on your tounge.
