Eli5 – Why and how does one bite his own tongue/cheeks? Ouch…

Your tongue doesn’t lie flat and motionless when you chew, it flops around like a sock in a washing machine, to help break the food down. Which is why if you are chewing something vigorously it can sometimes get caught between your teeth. Same with your cheeks, they get in the way because your jaw is moving as you chew.

I frequently manage to bite the underside of my tongue, I need to calm down when I’m eating lol

And don’t me started on biting down on the end of a barbell tongue piercing, jeeeeezle
