Eli5: Why are boom mics fluffy or why do they look fluffy?

They use a windscreen, a device made of foam that goes over the actual mic to reduce ambient noise, and vocal sounds that may be undesirable in the final recording. They are called windscreens or pop filters.

It’s a cover for the microphone proper that helps prevent wind noise and other unwanted sounds from getting in to a recording.
