[ELI5] Why are fingers different length?

Different lengths makes for a better grip when clutching an object, as the ends of your fingers provide the strongest point of grip, and varied finger lengths allow their strength to get staggered along different points of the object.
When your hand closes, all fingers virtually meet at a central point few inches above the palm. When all 5 meet, having different lengths allow them to form a cup shaped structure useful for grasping onto a branch or cupping a liquid.
