Eli5: Why are horses still so sound-sensitive, even though they were used in wars years ago? How could they have been used in wars?

They were trained. Horses aren’t natural soldiers any more than people are. They had to be exposed gradually to the sights and sounds of battle, and taught what to do.

There’s a video on YouTube of a guy who demonstrates this; I’ll see if I can find it.
