eli5: Why can’t we adjust our pupils before gping out in the sun but we can hold our breath when we are about to go underwater?

There are voluntary and involuntary actions the body can make. Taking a great before going under water is a voluntary action. The way your pupils dilate is involuntary. Meaning your pupils can’t be controlled by like a choice. And in addition normal breathing is involuntary. Meaning your brain makes you breath normally cause if you didn’t you’d die lol. But we can make deep or shallow breaths to voluntarily breath too.

Also, voluntary/involuntary may not be the correct term.
