[ELI5] Why can’t we just let out blood if the person has high blood pressure?

Ok this maybe be a very stupid question, but couldn’t we release just enough blood so the person doesn’t have high blood pressure?

It’s not a question of volume. It’s a question of why the heart has to push so hard to get the blood to circulate. Clogged arteries, swollen tissue causing blockages, etc all make the heart work very hard, which is hard on the heart and the high pressure is hard on every organ.

High blood pressure isn’t caused by having too much blood. It’s caused by restrictions in your veins so your heart has to work extra hard in order to push blood through them which is obviously bad for your heart and a sign that you could potentially have a heart attack or stroke because of it.

As others have pointed out the issue is the cause, not the effect. However, in cases of localized high blood pressure (priapism or “long lasting erection) letting out blood is exactly what they do.

I, for one, think this is a great idea. When someone comes into the doctors office, we slice the aorta then “the doctor will be with you momentarily….”

one hour later

.’whoops sorry the doc has been really backed up today. Err I guess we’ll just have to cancel your appointment sir, you’re beyond help. Get some rest….sir….sir… I cant have you sleeping here we need the space…’
